We have been working closely with Supermassive Games since 2021. Over the years, N-iX Games has become a key technical partner for their team. Our engineers have supported the development of several major titles, including House of Ashes and The Devil In Me. Because our studio has deep experience with both VR and Unreal Engine, we were able to jump in on Switchback VR as well.
Released in March 2023, The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR was one of the first titles developed for PlayStation VR2, Sony’s new-generation VR headset.
As a spin-off of The Dark Pictures Anthology, the game takes players on a horror-themed roller coaster ride through locations inspired by the first season of the series. Players use a variety of weapons to shoot enemies, targets, and interactive objects while moving through the levels.
As the ride progresses, players encounter obstacles, environmental hazards, and puzzles that require quick reactions and creative use of tools such as the UV light, flare gun, and stun gun.
The N-iX team joined the project early on to serve as the technical core behind the game. Our engineers worked on every main mechanic, but our focus was also making the most of the PS VR2 hardware. Together with Supermassive team we integrated several features that make the game feel truly immersive:
In addition to engineering work, our team contributed to level design and 3D art production.
Our artists modeled the entire weapon system, including the shotgun, semi-automatic pistols, grenade launcher, soul gun, etc. The team also created several enemy models and produced a wide range of environment props used throughout the levels. This included everything from the seats the players sit in to the destructible objects that provide weapon buffs. Every asset was designed to maintain the dark, atmospheric tone the series is known for.
Let’s start with an in-depth analysis of your idea, a high-level quote, and project plan. Once we smoothen all the rough edges we can proceed to the complete design, development, and production of your game, followed by release and post-release support.
