About the game

House of Ashes is a cinematic horror game, launched in 2021, developed by Supermassive Games and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. It represents the third installment in The Dark Pictures Anthology series. Set during the 2003 Iraq War, the story follows a group of soldiers and CIA operatives who uncover an ancient Sumerian temple buried underground. Key features of the game include its branching narratives, where players’ choices directly influence the outcome of the story. The game has been praised for its captivating plot, meticulous environment design, and enhanced mechanics compared to its predecessors, establishing it as a standout entry in the series.

N-iX Games’ Unreal Engine developers collaborated closely with Supermassive Games to co-develop every mechanic integral to the game. Our collective efforts ensured that “House of Ashes” capitalized on the full potential of Unreal Engine to offer an immersive and technically advanced gaming experience.

The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes leverages Unreal Engine’s capabilities to deliver a highly immersive experience. The game extensively uses dynamic lighting and shadow systems, along with advanced motion capture and facial animation systems, enabled by Unreal Engine’s robust animation toolset.

We also focused on utilizing Unreal Engine’s scripting functionalities to craft intricate narrative branches and a Quick Time Event system, supporting the complex choice-based gameplay. These elements ensure that each player’s decisions have meaningful impacts on the story’s progression and character outcomes.
