Netflix conceived Netflix Stories as a way to deepen fan engagement by letting audiences interact with their favorite shows. The concept filled a gap in the interactive fiction market: fans wanted to extend their viewing experience and feel part of the drama. Our client needed a reliable partner capable of delivering multiple high-quality, content-rich, story-driven games simultaneously under aggressive timelines.
By mid-2023, Netflix had identified a strong lineup of IPs ready for adaptation, from romance hits like Love Is Blind and Perfect Match to adventure-driven titles like Outer Banks. The challenge was scale and speed — each of these titles required a massive amount of unique content, and these projects needed to be developed simultaneously. After a successful art trial in June 2023, N-iX Games was brought on as a full-cycle development partner to make this vision a reality.
As the development partner, N-iX Games covered all aspects of production aside from the script. We formed dedicated teams to handle:
We approached the project with an Agile methodology, working in iterative sprints and maintaining close communication for feedback and approvals.
Over two years, we scaled up to six adaptable teams totaling 60+ professionals. These teams developed up to 5 game projects in parallel, and supported ongoing tools development that helped the rest of the game teams. By specialization, our team consisted of:
This structure allowed us to scale up or down dynamically to meet shifting priorities and deadlines. On average, a typical game spanned 10–14 months from script to release, with several titles in development at once.
Art was the cornerstone of the Netflix Stories experience. Our goal was to capture the unique tone and identity of each show while ensuring a cohesive visual style across the collection. Every character design, outfit, and environment was carefully crafted to meet fan expectations and align with Netflix’s brand aesthetics. Our team delivered:
N-iX Games worked in a tight feedback loop with Netflix: we submitted art assets regularly for review against the shows’ art direction. The Netflix team praised our art as “among the best” in the entire initiative, even noting it surpassed some of their internal efforts.
On the development side, we focused on building smooth, choice-driven gameplay experiences that worked seamlessly within the Netflix app ecosystem. Each game was developed using the Unity engine and optimized for iOS and Android.
The core of the gameplay revolved around branching dialogues and player-driven decisions, so we implemented a robust narrative scripting system capable of managing multiple story outcomes. Many titles adopted an episodic release structure, mirroring Netflix’s own approach to television content. For instance, Love Is Blind rolled out in chapters over several weeks, encouraging ongoing engagement and replayability.
Additional interactive elements, such as mini-games and relationship trackers, were introduced to deepen player involvement. Performance optimization was a constant priority — games had to run flawlessly across a wide range of devices, including older smartphones. Additionally, we had to ensure seamless integration with Netflix’s platform, including user authentication, offline play support for subscribers, etc.
Over the course of the partnership (2023–2025), N-iX Games contributed to 15 Netflix Stories titles. Perfect Match, Outer Banks, The Perfect Couple, Love Is Blind NYC, and Sweet Magnolias were successfully released, while The Love Contract and Ginny & Georgia Stories were publicly announced.
The Netflix Stories app itself achieved nearly 7 million downloads during this period, placing it among Netflix’s most successful gaming ventures. Feedback from Netflix on our art production and implementation was extremely positive. Every title delivered by N-iX was a complete, polished experience, featuring vibrant visuals, original music, and dozens of hours of engaging stories.
